KUCHING: Deputy Works Minister Datuk Yong Khoon Seng has pledged to help International Society for Krishna Consciousness here to settle full payment on their multipurpose hall at Jalan Ketitir in Batu Kawa.
“If I can get the money out, we’ll settle the payment with the contractor next month,” he said at the Sri Krishna Janmastami Maha Abhiseka ceremony yesterday.
The one-year old hall was built on a ‘build first, pay later’ concept. According to the society’s Kuching president, Kripa Sindhu Krishna Dasa, the contractor never chased them for the full payment but “it is still not nice to owe him payment for so long”.
The hall was built at a cost RM400,000 and has a capacity of 1,000 people Among activities conducted at the hall are tuition and yoga classes.
The Maha Abhiseka ceremony, held for Lord Krishna, saw devotees of all races celebrating the birth of Krishna by performing a ceremonial bathing of an icon of Krishna in streams of milk, honey, ghee, yogurt and other opulent liquids.
Yong, who is also Stampin MP, said the excellent culture of mutual participation during various religious celebrations was testimony to the prevailing understanding and unity in the community.
“I hope we can play effective roles to strengthen unity to allow the nation to realise her vision for the people to enjoy the fruits of peace and advancement,” he said, adding that this spirit of collective understanding and tolerance would help to curb elements of extremism in the country.
Also present at the ceremony was Padawan Municipal Council chairman Lo Khere Chiang.
