MARUDI: More than 200 students and parents attended a one-day seminar on student motivation and parenting.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau Jok urged the people of Baram to give priority to their children’s education to ensure a brighter future at the closing of the seminar organised by Marudi Branch of Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (SIDS) at the Civic Centre here last Saturday morning.

Dennis said they must prepare their children for the massive development expected in Baram in the next five years or so.

“This will create jobs opportunities at our doorstep and should be an aspiration for parents to ensure their children graduate with a first degree at least.

“But if we can’t provide proper education for our children and they fail to succeed in life, we must not blame others but ourselves,” he said.

Dennis gave parents some sound advice: create a harmonious family life; save for the higher education of their children; help their children with their homework; and reduce their children’s time watching TV so they could concentrate on their studies.

He said parents were responsible for providing a conducive environment for their children to study.

He also advised them to talk to successful people to plan for their children’s career.

“We must not leave education in the hands of teachers alone because our children spend a large amount of time at home,” Dennis pointed out.

Present were SIDS chairlady Julita Laja, seminar facilitator Ellision Ludan and headmen.
