KOTA KINABALU: Rouziana Amin was among 10 women accepted to train as a professional firefighter by the Fire and Rescue Services Department.

Born in Keningau, Rouziana, 21, was very proud of herself as her dream to be a women firefighter has finally come true.

“I have always wanted to be a woman firefighter as there are not many women who are ready to take such challenges,” she said when met at the trainee registration at the Fire and Rescue Department academic centre in Jalan Sulaman in Sepangar here yesterday.

For Edward Pretoes, 19, being recruited and trained as a firefighter was nothing new to him as he was a former cadet firefighter while studying at SMK Tambunan.

“With all the training I received as a cadet firefighter, I am confident and ready to face challenges in the training to be a firefighter,” said the Tambunan boy.

A total of 179 people from Sabah and Labuan have been accepted to undergo a six-month training as a firefighter and rescue personnel.

Fire and Rescue Services Department assistant director general of academic Hj Zulkarnain Mohd Kassim, who was at the academic centre to welcome the new recruits, said out of the figure, 172 were from Sabah while seven were from Labuan.

“This year we have 10 women who have been accepted to undergo training. Of the total recruits, 119 would be sent to the Wakaf Tapai academic centre in Terengganu for training, while the remaining would train in Sabah,” he said yesterday.

Also present were State Fire and Rescue Department director Nordin Pauzi and Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran Academy commander Zainal Madasin.
