Nana counts her luck to book quarter-finals berth

KUCHING: Nana Jap enjoyed a double lucky break to advance directly into the quarter-finals of the 1st Kuching Ladies 8-Ball Pool Championship at the Kuching Pool Sports Club, Premier 101 Commercial Centre on Monday night. Firstly, she had a walkover win in the last 32 as her opponent Dayang Norhayati failed to turn up for the match.

Then the two players drawn in another match Regita Philip and Cindy Tan also failed to turn up of for the match.

Jap was supposed to meet either Regita or Cindy Tan in the last 16 match today.

Her real test will begin tomorrow where her quarter-final opponent will either be Emillia Rajeli or Joanna Gilbert after the former edged Jane Loses 2-1 in the last 32 on Monday night while Joanna disposed of Chang Hui Shi 2-0.

The first player of the night to book her place in the last 16 was Mimi who also beat Stephanie Kung 2-0.

Those also qualified for the last 16 are Gia Kon who edged Wang Fang 2-1 and Flora Fan who blanked Crystal Ho 2-0.

Gia Kon will meet Flora Fan while Mimi will take on Rachel Edward after the latter beat Lydia Wong 2-1 in the opening match.

Eight more matches for the round of 32 are being played later yesterday while the quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played tomorrow, with the final fixed on Friday night.

The last 32 matches are based on the best of three frames while the winners of the semi-finals and final are decided by best of five frames.

The inaugural championship was opened by Sarawak Sports Commissioner’s office assistant officer Hazwan Salleh Baihaki who represented Sarawak Sports Commissioner Lamat Nyalau. Also present was Kuching Pool Sports Club president Lee Juk Chiang.
