OYA: It is imperative for parents to shower their children with care and love in order to create a strong, resilient and responsible generation, said Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Datin Fatimah Abdullah.

Additionally, Fatimah also reminded parents to be patient in guiding their children as they learn to grow up by acquiring more knowledge and skills in order to achieve their goals and ambitions.

Fatimah made the remarks in her speech as guest-of-honour at the Effective Parenting Seminar, organised by Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) of SMK Oya in collaboration with Mimbar Permuapakatan Ibubapa Malaysia (Mapim) Sarawak branch and Oya sub-district office, held at the school here yesterday.

The seminar was also attended by deputy Mukah Resident (social) Philip Peter Salam, SAO Julaihi Narawi of Oya sub-district office, Dalat district Education Officer Anthony Phoon, SMK Oya principal Awang Omar Ali Awang Yahya and PIBG chairman Awang Ahmad Shastri Awang Senusi, Mapim Sarawak branch chairman Wan Zain Syed Mohdzar, teachers and parents.

Stressing that proper education and guidance begin at home, Fatimah called on parents to maintain good relationship and understanding with the teachers in order to produce students who are good in their studies, active in sport and co-curricular activities, posses religious knowledge and morally upright inside and outside of school at all times.

Among the highlights of the seminar was a talk on good parenting skills by motivational expert, who is also principal of SMK Padungan Kuching, Dr Safie Lugom who drew laughters and applauses from the audience, and a public forum on the same subject with Dr Safie, Philip, Wan Zain and Mukah Divisional Islamic Religious Department officer Shamsudin Bashir as panelists.

Fatimah, who is also Dalat assemblywoman, also presented 11 units of 1Malaysia laptop computers from Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) under the government’s National Broadband Initiative (NBI) to selected students from SMK Oya.

The four-in-one function also saw Fatimah officially launching a donation drive to collect funds for building a multi-purpose hall at SMK Oya before she attended a Hari Raya Aidilfitri gathering at the school.
