KUANTAN: The Pahang State Assembly was told yesterday that the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had terminated the Internet line to 30 cyber cafes in Kuantan after they were found to be involved with gambling activities.

State Information, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin said the action was taken following an application by the Kuantan Municipal Council (MPK) against 34 cyber cafes found to be using their premises for immoral activities.

He said investigation on the other four premises was still in progress by Telekom Malaysia.

“MCMC, with the cooperation of MPK and the Kuantan police, is also investigating 64 cyber cafes in Kuantan on suspicion of operating illegal gambling,” he said in response to a question by Datuk Pang Tsu Ming (BN-Semambu) at the State Assembly sitting here yesterday.

Mohd Sharkar said that between January last year and July this year, raids were conducted at 106 premises suspected of operating illegal gambling, which resulted in the seizure of 896 computers.

A total of 434 people were detained during the raid and action was taken against 16 of them, he added.

Meanwhile, State Human Resource and Consumer Affairs Committee Chairman Datuk Fong Koong Fuee said 207 public servants in Pahang had been investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) since 2006 and July this year.

Kuantan recorded the highest number, at 48 people, followed by Raub (40), Bentong (30), Pekan (22), Maran (18), Temerloh (15), Rompin (10), Lipis (8), Jerantut (7), Bera (5) and Cameron Highlands (4), he added.

He said a total of 351 investigation papers were opened and 64 people had been convicted for corruption. — Bernama
