SIBU: Public security at Sibu Jaya Township has slacked, causing residents to have sleepless nights, claims Dudong assemblyman Yap Hoi Liong.

He said he had written to the police chief here, ACP Shafie Ismail, voicing the residents’ concern.

“The residents have told
me that they were living in fear. They have many sleepless nights due to the rampant theft cases which have hit the residential area of late,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

Yap also claimed that many of the theft cases were not reported to the police.

“I have advised victims to lodge police reports,” he said.

Yap also said a friend living in the township almost lost his car last week.

“He was lucky to arrive home in time to scare away the thief,” he said.

On another occasion, he said thieves broke into
a house and took away a plasma television worth RM2,000.

“There were other theft cases involving jewelry and other items,” he claimed.

ACP Shafie, meanwhile said that security in Sibu Jaya was not as bad as Yap had painted it.

He said: “In fact, Sibu Jaya is safer than most other residential areas.”

While admitting that there were petty thefts every now and then in the township, he said there were no major theft cases reported there of late.

He echoed the advice of Yap to theft victims that they should report the cases to the police.

He assured the people of Sibu Jaya that his men would make regular patrols of the area.

“We have always been very concerned about providing public security in all residential areas and hopefully, the people will also lend us their support.

“Together, we can work to combat crimes,” Shafie said.a
