SIBU: Jalur Gemilang and Sarawak flags were flying high when 2,400 people participated in the Malaysia Day assembly and parade at Sibu Jaya yesterday.

The event was organised by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of SMK Sibu Jaya.
With the theme ‘1Malaysia Transformasi Berjaya Rakyat Sejahtera’, the event aimed to instill patriotic spirit among the people, to instill unity in the education institution and to remind the students of the significance of Malaysia Day.
Those participating in the parade were students of SMK Sibu Jaya; uniform bodies such as police cadet, girl guide, scouts, red crescent and so forth; students from SMK Bukit Assek; SMK Bandar Sibu; Rela team; SK Tian Hua and the National Service trainees.
The event was celebrated with patriotic performances including a choir, dances, and poem recitation.
In his speech, Tamin assemblyman Joseph Mauh said Sept 16 was a day to remember the first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman. He said though achieving independence was no easy task, unlike other countries, Malaysia achieved hers peacefully.
“Other countries had to experience bloodshed to achieve independence, but we did not have to.
“When Malaya received its independence in 1957, it was through negotiations and then in 1963, Malaysia was formed, also through negotiations,” he said.
He urged the people to stay united to ensure continued development of the country, especially in achieving Vision 2020.
