11 killed, 14 missing in boat sinking in Bali

JAKARTA: Eleven people were killed and 14 others went missing after a boat sank in waters off Bali island of Indonesia on Wednesday, rescuers said.

The boat was carrying musicians of a traditional gamelan percussion orchestra to perform in a burial ceremony on Nusa Penida island when it sank in bad weather, Ketut Parwa, the head of Bali’s Search and Rescue Agency told DPA today.

The boat broke down one mile after leaving the seaport at Jungut Batu of Lembangan after midnight, Kadek Adi Yuda, rescuers at Bali Search and Rescue Office told Xinhua by phone.

The rescue operations by rescuers and sailors with the help of helicopters and ships for the missing are underway, said Yuda.

The boat was toward Toyopakek of Bali, said Yuda. According to a survivor, the boat was hit by huge waves, he said. But he did not say how many passengers were aboard the boat as the accident happened.

The boat was carrying 35 passengers, 11 of whom have been rescued, Ketut Parwa said. – Agencies
