Tarat folk celebrate Sagah’s double blessing

KUCHING: Tarat folk are celebrating the double blessing on their assemblyman Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

Sagah was awarded the Panglima Gemilang Bintang Kenyalang (PGBK), which carries the title ‘Datuk’ in conjunction with Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin Abang Barieng’s official 90th birthday on Saturday.

He was also recently appointed State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Deputy Speaker.

The Borneo Post has learnt that the appointment as deputy to Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar took effect from Aug 1 and Sagah could be sworn in sometime this week.

The post of a DUN Deputy Speaker is said to be equivalent to that of an Assistant Minister and has similar perks.

However, when contacted yesterday, Sagah, who is also Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) chairman, remained tight-lipped.

“It will only be proper for an official announcement to be made. As for me, I cannot say anything at this juncture,” he said.

He neither confirmed nor denied the revelation by Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communication Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong in Tebedu on Monday.

Manyin, who is Tebedu assemblyman, had said that Sagah’s appointment was a bonus for the Bidayuh community for their unceasing loyalty to Barisan Nasional (BN), and delivering all their parliamentary and state seats in several past elections.

At present, there are three parliamentary seats with Bidayuh Members of Parliament — Mas Gading, which is held by the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party’s (SPDP) Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe; Mambong, which is held by Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos Mamit from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB); and Serian, which is held by Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Richard Riot Jaem of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP).

Besides Sagah and Manyin, the other Bidayuh assemblymen are Ranum Mina (Opar), Assistant Minister of Environment Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie (Tasik Biru), Dr Jerip Susil (Bengoh) and Martin Ben (Kedup).

Of the six, Manyin, Sagah and Martin are from PBB, while Ranum and Dr Jerip are from SUPP and Nansian is from SPDP.
