KUCHING: A battered wife’s two-year-long ordeal at the hands of her abusive husband came to an end on Wednesday night when he was arrested by police for assault.

The 34-year-old jobless man from Kampung Tabuan Lot was detained around 10pm at the Kenyalang marketplace after his 28-year-old wife tipped off the police of his whereabouts.

When met, the woman said she had been a victim of domestic violence for the past two years, with her jobless husband frequently physically beating her, or threatening to harm her, in front of their three young sons.

“There were times when we would arrive back home and he would order me to remove my helmet because he felt like punching me. I did not dare to disobey out of fear he would hurt me even more,” she said.

According to her, the latest incident took place at the Kenyalang marketplace itself earlier the same afternoon when her husband bashed her with his motorcycle helmet, resulting in gashes and swelling to the right side of her face.

She sought medical attention after the attack and received four stitches to close a wound above her right eye, before summoning the courage to lodge a police report.

Following his arrest, the abusive husband, described as an alcoholic, was overheard questioning policemen as to why they were arresting him as he had ‘done nothing wrong’.

He is currently being held in the lockup pending an investigation.
