Mandatory standards to improve Internet access

SANDAKAN: The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is developing mandatory standards for fixed broadband services to improve Internet access in the country.

MCMC Sabah and Labuan director Bukhari Yahya said the standards must be seen as being able to reduce complaints from broadband customers.

He said that until September this year, MCMC had received more than 2,000 complaints related to broadband services, with 26 percent of the complaints being about service quality.

Fifty-two of the complaints were received from consumers in Sabah, mostly from individual users, he said when officiating at a seminar on Consumer Rights in Communication and Multimedia Service at Sabah Hotel here yesterday.

Among the issues raised were unsatisfactory Internet service coverage and unreasonable charges imposed by service providers.

Bukhari said consumer awareness about their rights is essential so that issues would be raised for MCMC to act on towards improving service quality in the industry.

MCMC plays a role in ensuring consumers receive proper service that meets their needs and satisfaction, he said, adding that both MCMC and the Communication and Multimedia Consumer Forum of Malaysia (CFM) had received complaints from the public about the quality of communications and multimedia services provided in the country.

Also present at the seminar was CFM executive director Azizan Affandi.
