Make intentions clear before offering ‘assistance’, PPP told

KUCHING: People’s Progressive Party (PPP) should come clean on its decision to spread its wings to Sarawak before offering its ‘sincere’ assistance to the State Barisan Nasional (BN) in the coming general election.

PBB youth vice chief Pandi Suhaili pointed out that so far the explanations provided by the party leaders were non-satisfactory.

“In the past the party said it had to come to Sarawak because of requests made by few hundred Sarawakians.

“It is not a good argument because those who wanted to bring in Umno claimed to have ten thousand Sarawakians behind their efforts but still Umno didn’t want to come in as the party respected the local parties in the state.

“To us in the PBB Youth, when PPP decided not to emulate Umno in respecting the spirit of Barisan Nasional, it showed us that the party had an ulterior motive of coming over here,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He added while PBB Youth is always willing to accept assistance from any party to ensure BN win in elections, he doubted whether the State Barisan Nasional is willing to take the risk of accepting such an offer from
PPP.

He stressed that PPP has shown its dishonesty by not knocking the door of the State BN when it came over.

“It is not normal for us to accept an offer of assistance from someone who has entered our house without knocking on the door or getting permission from the house occupants.

“This is because we know that the person has an ulterior motive,” he said.

The vice youth chief, who is also the PBB Youth Economy Bureau Chief, subsequently urged the PPP state leadership to get a BN leader from the peninsula who is not from the party to justify the party’s presence in Sarawak before trying to offer its assistance.

He said he had been making calls to BN leaders to justify PPP’s move but many seem to be evading from answering this very important question.

“We want to know their stand on this issue because right now many of us in the party do not know how to respond on the issue,” he said, adding the issue could give a negative impact on the preparation for the general election if the BN leaders in Semenanjung continue to be silent on the matter.

Last Saturday, PPP senior vice president Datuk Maglin Dennis D’Cruz was quoted as saying the presence of PPP in the state was to show support for the Barisan Nasional.
