MIRI: Miri Hospital is expected to provide better medical services to patients with its new facilities and services.

The Ministry of Health approved four new projects for Miri Hospital: a pathology laboratory, isolation ward for infectious diseases, surgical theatre and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) building and machine.

Communication and Sports Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin announced this after witnessing Miri Buddhist Society (1993) present a cheque to Miri Hospital at the office of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) here.

The donation to benefit cancer patients was presented to hospital director Dr Jack Wong by a representative of the society.

“The four projects were approved beginning this year. It is not that easy as people and some quarters might think, as the government has to undergo various procedures and channels before approving any project,” Lee said.

Squashing the claim that the government and ministry only implement the projects after being barked at by the opposition, Lee who is also Senadin assemblyman said it had nothing to do with the opposition.

“The projects were approved some time in January this year and soon after the visit of Minister of Health to Miri last year. The projects can take off now after going through the required procedures and process,” he said.

The project had been tendered out and the work is expected to be carried out soon.

“It is just a coincident that they seem to be approved and implemented after the (state) election. The government doesn’t implement projects only after the opposition point fingers or make noise,” Lee said.

Recently, the hospital had its car park extended for the convenience of the public. In the pipeline are the laying of steel guard rails at strategic spots in the hospital for the safety of patients, especially the elderly.
