Own goal blows Selangor selection’s hopes of winning Sultan’s Cup

SHAH ALAM: Despite the presence of two former English Premier League stars, Selangor Selection failed overcome a Singapore Selection in the 10th edition of the Sultan Selangor Cup at the Shah Alam Stadium here Saturday night.

Selangor went down 0-1 after defender Mohamed Asraruddin Putra Omar scored an own goal in the 66th minute, a result that did not help Selangor’s bid to avenge the 0-6 defeat last year.

Despite playing at Selangor’s own den and strengthened by English players Jesper Blomqvist and Jason MacAteer and well aided by Safee Sali, the Singapore side coached by Radojko Avramovic were not to be denied their glory.

But while the young side coached by P. Maniam failed to wrest the cup from Singapore, there was some consolation for Maniam who scored the opening goal to set the tone for the Selangor Veterans to overcome their Singapore counterparts 3-1.

The Selangor Veterans side captained by Datuk Soh Chin Aun opened the score through Maniam’s 7th minute strike and added another two goals through Dollah Salleh in the 12th and 40th minutes — Bernama
