BINTULU: Teaching are highly respected people and a `soul engineer’ of sorts for the younger generation, said Senator Pau Chiong Ung.

“They play a very important role in the development and prosperity of a nation. To a certain extent teachers do determine the future of a country,” he said when speaking at the Bintulu Education Office Hari Raya open house recently.

He said nowadays the younger generation tend to form their strong opinions and thoughts, and this had made teaching a more challenging profession.

“With the advent of advanced ICT technologies, including video games, cell phones and computers, we observed that students are easily impressed by these sophisticated gadgets and neglect their education. This becomes a challenge for teachers to ensure that our students learn what should be studied
according to their level,” said Pau.

As such, teachers must use a smart approach “rationally, reasonably and professionally” when they teach.

Apart from that, Pau also urged parents to play their role in educating their children and not to leave everything to the teachers.

Also present were Bintulu education officer Tan Kiang Tuang and Sebauh education officer Teri Bayel.
