‘Don’t let fight for party posts split SUPP’

KUCHING: SUPP assistant secretary general Datuk Lee Kim Shin yesterday cautioned party members not to let the coming triennial delegates conference (TDC) drive a wedge in the party.

He said regardless of whether there would be election for the top posts in the party or not what matters most was that the members remain united as one family.

“Of course it is best if a decision could be reached based on consensus but if the majority of the delegates prefer elections then so be it. We should allow the process of democracy to take its course.

“However, should there be any contest for the party top posts it should be done based on the spirit of comradeship. We don’t want to see factions in the party because that will only further weaken us,” he said.

He said because of that the future of the party now lies in the hands of the delegates who will decide what would be best for everybody.

“Like what our deputy secretary general Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has said, we leave it all to the political wisdom of the delegates to decide who they want to lead the party.

“If they give us the mandate then we are ready to take up the challenge and work closely together with the rest to revamp the party,” he said.

He told reporters this after receiving a courtesy call from Sarawak Taekwondo Association (PTNS-WTF) at his office in Bangunan Masja here yesterday.

He was asked to comment on talks that Wong and he were running mates for the president and secretary general posts respectively.

The post of party president is currently held by Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan while the secretary general is Datuk Sim Kheng Hui who had both announced that they would not be retaining their posts.

To another question, Lee said since a number of central party leaders had indicated that they would not be defending their posts, more young people should be in the next line-up.

“We expect the various branches will be sending young leaders and if that is so then the new line-up will certainly be having more young people,” he said.

However, he said, a complete overhaul in the party leadership should not be allowed because a good team should ideally be a mixture of both old and young people.

“Our party is now facing a very difficult time so let us all wake up and walk hand in hand to regain its past glory,” he added.
