KUCHING: The University of Southampton, which is establishing a new branch campus in Malaysia
next year, has been ranked as one of the top 75 universities in the world, according to an international rankings guide.
In the 2011 QS World University League Rankings, Southampton is ranked in 75th place, one of only 19 UK universities in the global elite of 100 higher education institutions.
This is the university’s highest ranking in the table and the third year in a row that it has improved its position.
The QS rankings are one of only a few internationally recognised indicators of excellence in teaching, research, citations of research, industry reputation and the international mix of students and staff.
“We are delighted to see that we continue to be acknowledged for our world-class performance and placed firmly within the top 100 universities in the world.
“I am particularly pleased that our progress appears to be on the basis of improvements in academic performance in research and international employers’ opinions of our graduates,” said Professor Don Nutbeam, vice-chancellor of the University of Southampton.
The University of Southampton has also been shortlisted for the title of University of the Year in the prestigious 2011 Times Higher Education Awards in recognition of its bold and imaginative initiatives such as taking a leading role in curriculum innovation, pioneering the next generation of Internet infrastructure and new multi-disciplinary ventures in life science, marine technology and biomedical research.
In education, the University is taking a leading role in curriculum innovation.
Through its Curriculum Innovation Programme, Southampton is investigating how it can maximise
its cross-disciplinary strengths, offering the University’s 22,000 students more flexibility and choice in their studies beyond their selected discipline, preparing them for the complex challenges of the future.
In January, a £7.2 million investment in Southampton-led research to revolutionise the Internet was announced.
The University of Southampton is the birthplace of the technology that led to the development of the Internet, with researchers leading the world in developing the optical amplifier, which connects people globally via the Internet.
Cross-disciplinary collaboration is at the heart of the University’s new Life Sciences building, which won a prestigious Riba Award in May.
Southampton’s partnership with marine specialists, Lloyd’s Register is the largest research collaboration of its kind in the UK moved forward this year.
The Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute, announced in December, will include the Lloyd’s Register Group Technology Centre. The collaboration will focus on innovations in transport, energy and the environment.
Another new joint venture is with Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust on the unique £9 million Southampton Centre for Biomedical Research, which will include the development of new treatments for respiratory diseases
and the study of how our lifestyle and diet affects our health, a collaboration that underlines the University’s commitment to improving global health.
The University has also been shortlisted in the categories Outstanding ICT Initiative of the Year and Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Development.
This success recognises the University’s globally renowned expertise, which is now being expanded with the opening of the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus, next year.
The Malaysia campus will be located within EduCity, under Iskandar Investment Berhad’s development based in South Johor, Malaysia.
