Salesgirl fined for selling pirated DVDs

KOTA KINABALU: A local salesgirl was fined RM7,000, in default, three months’ jail, by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for selling 677 copies of pirated Digital Video Discs (DVDs) last month.

Rosna Ikram, 20, pleaded guilty before magistrate Herlina Muse to selling the items without the ‘B’ certificate at a premises at the Centre Point shopping centre here on Sept 21.

Rosna was charged under Section under Section 18 (4) (a) of the Film Censors Act 2002, punishable under Section 18 (5) of the same Act, which carries a fine of not less than RM5,000 or not more than RM30,000, or a maximum jail of three years, or both, upon conviction.

The Home Ministry’s prosecuting officer Mohd Badrul Hafiz Salleh told the court, that an enforcement team had conducted a raid on the premises and found that all the DVDs of various titles were being sold without the ‘B’ certificate.

Mohd Badrul also said that the enforcement team had seized all the items and sent them to the Karamunsing police station for further action.

During the raid, Rosna admitted to the police that she was only a salesgirl of the premises.
