BESUT: An ambulance driver from the Besut District Hospital received a black eye after he was punched by an angry man for allegedly arriving late to take his expectant wife to the hospital for delivery.

The incident which happened at the Taman Abdullah low-cost housing scheme in Alor Lintah, near Jerteh, was also witnessed by a medical officer and two nurses who also came in the ambulance.

In the 2.45am incident yesterday, the ambulance driver, Mahadi Mohd Jaafar, 39, was also punched on his left cheek by the woman’s husband.

Met by reporters, Mahadi said at about 2.30am, he was ordered by the officer-in-charge to fetch a woman who was in labour pain to the hospital.

He said before going to the woman’s house, he had to get a medical officer and two nurses to come along and they arrived at the house about 15 minutes later.

“Upon arrival, a man scolded us, saying that we were late and he suddenly punched my left eye and cheek.

“His family members then calmed him down,” he added.

During the commotion, however, the medical officer and the two nurses helped the woman deliver twins.

Mahadi said he lodged a report on the incident at the Jerteh police station about 40 minutes later, after sending the woman and her twins to the hospital.

Besut police chief Supt Kamaruddin Mohd Zakaria when contacted, confirmed that police had received the report. — Bernama
