12 women lawyers admitted to Sabah Bar

KOTA KINABALU: Twelve women lawyers, including Sandakan High Court deputy registrar Elsie Primus, were admitted to the Sabah Bar recently.

The other 11 are deputy public prosecutor Monica Linsua, Datuk Noni Said’s daughter Roaxana Jamaludin, Edina Sung Burongoh, Eow Ee Pei, Jay Ferrer Jeffrey Linjungan, Alice Chew Yun Chee, Michelle Rossana Usman, Amriati Amring, Darmin Achok, Rebecca Taimin and Gayle Anthony Jokinin.

Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Richard Malanjum granted the motions from the 12 lawyers to be enrolled and admitted in the High Court in Sabah and Sarawak pursuant to Section 4,5, and 6, of the Advocates Ordinance.

Sabah Law Association (SLA) president Ganesh Naandy and Senior State Counsel Dayangku Fazidah Hatun Pg. Bagul from the State Attorney-General Chambers raised no objection to the applications from all the lawyers.

Elsie, 31, from Kampung Toboh, Tambunan, who read law at Universiti Malaya, graduated in August 2003 with Bachelor in Law (Hons).

In August 2005, she was conferred Master in Laws (Hons) and is currently attached to the High Court in Sandakan as a deputy registrar since Jan 2, 2009.

Previously, Elsie was a legal officer at Court of Justice in Putrajaya in April 2005 before being transferred to Melaka as a magistrate and then to Sandakan on Aug 15, 2007, also as a magistrate. She was promoted to Deputy Registrar of the High Court in Sandakan on Jan 2, 2009.

Elsie was admitted to the Malaysian Bar in the High Court of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur on April 2, 2004.

Monica, 28, who hails from Kampung Kalamansi, Beluran and read law at Universiti Technology MARA, Shah Alam, graduated in September 2005 with Bachelor of Law (LLB).

In November 2006, she was awarded Bachelor of Law with Honours and was appointed as a magistrate in Sandakan in April 2008 before reporting for duty as the deputy public prosecutor attached to the Federal Attorney General’s Chambers, Sabah branch on Oct 17 this year.

Prior to that, she was a legal officer at Court of Justice in Putrajaya in April 2007 and was transferred to Sandakan as Senior Assistant Registrar of the High Court in May the same year.
