BESUT: A senior citizen received eight stitches on his shoulder and chest after being slashed by a robber who broke into his house in Kampung Gong Nangka near Jerteh here, yesterday.

Abdul Ghani Jusoh, 69, who is living with his 68-year-old ailing wife, was taken to Besut Hospital before being referred to Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital in Kubang Kerian an hour later.

Besut police chief Supt Kamaruddin Mohd Zakaria said the robber was believed to have entered the victim’s house through the kitchen at 11.15pm.

“The victim was about to fall asleep when he heard the sound of glass breaking. Thinking that it was just caused by cats, he ignored it.

“A few minutes later, he heard another sound of glass breaking and this time, he went to check it out. Outside his bedroom, the robber was already waiting to attack him using two machetes from the kitchen,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

Kamaruddin said after the fight, the robber fled the scene without realising that he had dropped his mobile phone and wrist watch in the victim’s house.

With quick action by the police and cooperation from the villagers, the suspect was arrested at 8.10am today, while hiding in the bush in Kampung Bukit Kenak, about two kilometres from the scene.

During the arrest, the suspect tried to put up a fight against the police using the machetes, he said, adding that the 27-year-old suspect from Kampung Pachakan, Pasir Putih was also tested positive for drug.

Meanwhile, Abdul Ghani said he knew something was wrong when he heard the sound of glass breaking for the second time.

However, he never thought that the robber was waiting to attack him outside his bedroom.

“I fought with the robber for almost 20 minutes and managed to punched him on the cheek and lips. Only after the robber fled the house did I realise  that I was slashed on the shoulder and chest and immediately sought help from my relatives to get to the hospital,” he said. — Bernama
