KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) will launch on Nov 10 the ‘Che Det’ coffee table book, depicting the great moments in the career of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the country’s fourth prime
minister, to complement ongoing efforts to document the history of shaping Malaysia as a nation-state.

The 418-page bilingual book, published by Bernama in Bahasa Malaysia and English, has been compiled to serve as resource material on national leaders and as a historical reference.

The book contains over 470 captioned photographs taken from the time that Tun Dr Mahathir, or ‘Che Det’ as he is affectionately called, took office as the prime minister in 1981 up to after his retirement in 2003.

“Bernama takes great pride in publishing this book in recognition of the enormous deeds and contributions to the people and country by Tun Dr Mahathir who has carved for himself attributes such as Great Statesman, Father of Malaysia’s Modernisation, Malaysia’s No 1 Salesman and Hero of the Third World,” said Bernama deputy editor-in-chief Datuk Zulkefli Salleh, who led the editorial team of the publication.

While most coffee table books are published for light reading, this pictorial book is rich in information on the events during Dr Mahathir’s tenure as the prime minister, covering his role in association with parliamentary democracy, family, politics, social welfare, media, international relations and administration as well as his role as a statesman.

Readers will embark on the journey of Dr Mahathir’s career in this book by reading the thoughts of Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim who pays tribute to the statesman who inspired the rallying call of “Malaysia Boleh” (Malaysia Can).

‘Che Det’ will be officially launched by  Dr Mahathir and  Rais on Nov 10 at the Palace of the Golden
Horses Hotel in Seri Kembangan. An exhibition of material published in the book will be open to the public there. The book can be ordered directly from Bernama starting Nov 10 at  RM250 per copy. — Bernama
