KUALA LUMPUR: Police have taken several statements from the organisers of the banned ‘2011 Seksualiti Merdeka’ event at the Tenaganita office here, yestesrday.

Four police personnel from the Brickfields headquarters took statements from ‘Seksualiti Merdeka’ co-founder Pang Khee Teik, former Bar Council president Datuk S Ambiga, women’s rights group Empower Malaysia executive-director Maria Chin Abdullah and Tenaganita executive-director Irene Fernandez about 4pm.

Pang said he handed over a letter for the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar, after his statement was recorded.

“We are seeking an audience with the IGP to clarify our objectives and to show that we’re not doing what the media claims we are,” Pang asserted.

Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, who was present, supported the event saying it aimed to defend fundamental human rights.

“Two years ago I officiated at this event, without any problems.  It only seeks to educate the marginalised community about their legal rights,” she said.
