ALOR SETAR: The Ipoh-Padang Besar Electrified Double-Tracking Project (EDTP) contractor, MMC Gamuda Joint Venture (MGJV) is prepared to deploy 2,000 workers to clean up water drainage systems in Kedah and Perlis to avert floods.

MGJV director Datuk Azmi Mat Nor said the workers had been put on call and would be deployed immediately to carry out cleaning works if there were reports on clogged drains in the two states.

“What worries us the most is that when it’s raining heavily, trapped garbage will cause drains to be clogged,” he told reporters here yesterday.

Hence, he said MGJV would also ensure that its lorries and excavators would also be placed along the EDTP site to facilitate the cleaning works.

Among the low-lying and flood prone areas along the EDTP site are Kodiang, Megat Dewa, Tunjang, Sungai Korok, Anak Bukit and Alor Setar in Kedah, as well as Bukit Ketri, Mata Air and Arau in Perlis, he said.

“All data that we received daily from the Meteorological Department will also be disseminated to the emergency team that we have set up as required,” he said.

Azmi said the public with drainage problems could also contact MGJV hotline at 1-300-80-1999 for assistance.

MGJV is the contractor appointed for the 330km northern electrified double tracking project between Ipoh in Perak and Padang Besar in Perlis. The project is expected to be completed in December 2013. — Bernama
