KUCHING: More than 70 students received the KTS Bursary Award from KTS Foundation yesterday.

Introduced in 2009, the annual KTS Bursary Award of RM200 is given to deserving secondary school students in Sarawak.

Students also receive a complimentary copy of Utusan Borneo or See Hua Daily News — for one full year.

This year, a total of 221 students from 80 secondary schools around Sarawak were selected for the award. Application forms were extended to 183 secondary schools.

In his speech, KTS Bursary Awards Committee chairman Wong Sing Seng said among the KTS Foundation Bursary’s main objectives were to reduce the financial burden of parents in helping students strive for academic excellence and to promote reading.

“A deserving student is defined as a promising student who has achieved good school examination results and comes from a low-income family,” said Wong, who is also See Hua Group Kuching area manager.

KTS Foundation also gives donations to schools and offers scholarships for tertiary education to children of KTS and See Hua Group employees as well as subscribers of See Hua Group newspapers.

“In addition, the foundation also provides cash incentives to children of KTS and See Hua Group staff for achieving outstanding results in their SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia), STPM (Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia) and Chinese Middle School Unified public examination in accordance with one of the foundation’s objectives, which is to promote higher education achievement,” said Wong.
