KOTA KINABALU: A 16-year-old boy was killed in a hit-and-run incident at Jalan Tuaran in front of RTM building, Karamunsing here yesterday.
The victim, identified as Mohamad Ashrul Mohd Awang, from Kampung Lok Kawi Baru, died at the scene when he was knocked by a Perodua Myvi car while crossing the road around 9.30pm.
It is said that Mohamad Ashrul and five of his friends, who had just finished their work at a hotel, were crossing the road towards the RTM building when the Perodua Myvi car that was heading towards the city centre knocked him.
Due to the impact, he was thrown a couple of meters away and landed on a road island, while the driver of the Perodua Myvi car fled.
According to one of the deceased’s friends, Mohd Shazwan, they had just finished work and were on their way to the Shell station to buy drinks when the incident happened.
“Mohamad Ashrul crossed the road first. As he was about to reach the road island, suddenly a car that was heading towards the city swerved to the right and knocked him,” he said when met at the scene yesterday.
The victim’s body was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for a post-mortem.
Police are calling for eyewitnesses to come forward to assist them in the investigation.
This was the second hit-and-run incident in the state capital.
On Sunday, a 70-year-old woman, Veronica Kunihing from Kampung Maang, Penampang, was fatally knocked down at 5.49am on Jalan Papar Lama near her village.
On Saturday morning, a father and son died after their Perodua Kancil car collided with an eight-tonne lorry in Kolombong.
Ghani Mad, 69, and his son Roshemey Ghani, 34, were pronounced dead upon arrival at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
