7A scorer says due to hard work, deities’ blessing

KOTA KINABALU: Voon Jia Hao attributed his achievement in scoring 7A’s in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) equally to hard work and the blessing of deities.

Voon, who is a basketball player in SJK(C) Chung Hwa Kota Kinabalu, said he came across a temple in Penang while representing his school in the national basketball competition.

“I prayed that I could achieve 7As in UPSR, and I did,” he revealed.

Nonetheless, Voon did work hard by allocating three hours a day to study after his extra-curricular activities in the afternoon. He also attended tuiton classes.

Voon will be studying in Kota Kinabalu High School when the school term starts next year.

Kuan Jin Hong is another student who obtained 7As in UPSR. He has always been a top student at school, as well as taking part in various academic competitions.

He won a gold medal in the National Mathematical Olympiad this year, and a silver medal last year. He also participated in the General Knowledge Quiz organized by Kota Kinabalu Hakka Association.

Kuan’s father, Dr Kuan Pui Seng, is a pediatrician who owns a clinic at Lintas Plaza, while his mother Fam Siaw Shyi is a teacher at SJK(C) Chung Hwa Kota Kinabalu.

Kuan is a relatively shy boy and modest about his achievements.

Kuan is also said to be an avid reader of science books, as well as those on physics.

Meanwhile, SJK(C) Chung Hwa Kota Kinabalu reported 24 students with 7As, 36 students with 6As and 40 students with 5As in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) result that was released yesterday.

The school recorded a pass rate of more than 80 per cent for every subjects, which include Chinese comprehension 83 pc, Chinese composition 80.3pc, Malay comprehension 86.2 pc, Malay composition 88.5 pc, English 82 pc, Mathematics 94.4 pc and Science 92.2 pc.

It is worth nothing that the passing rate of Mathematics subject has maintained above 92 per cent for the past 15 years.

Principal Datuk Eng Thiam Leong expressed his gratitude towards the teachers for their effort in educating the students, and the parents for being involved in their children’s education.

He also hopes that the teachers would work harder to providing the best education to achieve outstanding results in academic in years to come.

The students who obtained 7As are Natalie Kong Ho Wai, Foo Yie Wan Yvonne, Fiona Wong Hui Yan, Briney Wong Xuan Qing, Sally Chia, Irene Tsang Ai Ling, Connie Wong, Dennis Lee Jia Yang, Francesca Chin, Ginny Liau, Goh Siew Yee, Har May Ling, Jane Tay, Jasmine Yeoh, Jemimah Chhoa, Koh Gui Yin, Kuan Jin Hong, Liew Jun Yan, Lim Yung Jett, Tan Sai Ki, Tan Yan Ni, Wong Jing Chung, Wong Xin Yi, and Voon Jia Hao.
