ALOR SETAR: The use of Global Positioning System (GPS) for Fishing can reduce the costs of fishing operation by 30 per cent and increase the fishermen’s income by 20 per cent, Fisheries Department director-general Datuk Ahmad Sabki Mahmood said.

He said by using the system, the time needed by the fishermen to locate fish would also be reduced by 50 per cent.

“Prior to this, fishermen have to use their expertise and experience in locating fish and sometimes, ended up with just a small amount of fish caught in the net.

“Along with wasted time, the fishermen also had to bear the rising costs of fuel, ice cubes, as well as the salary of the
skipper and crewmen,” he told a press conference yesterday.
