MACHANG: Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the government would study whether the RM100 allowance given to students up to Form Five should be extended to sixth formers as well.

“We will see whether it is justified,” he said, acknowledging that form six and pre-university students were getting a RM200 book voucher.

Muhyiddin who is also Education Minister said this in a media conference after an “afternoon with the deputy prime minister” session attended by 10,000 people at Sekolah Kebangsaan Machang Dua, here yesterday.

Also present were International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and Finance Deputy Minister Dr Awang Adek Hussin.

He also urged private religious schools to register with the Education Department’s Islamic education unit to enable their students to also receive the RM100 allowance.

On politics, Muhyiddin said Barisan Nasional (BN) would resolve the water dilemma faced by the Kelantan people if they gave it the mandate to govern the state through the 13th general election.

He noted that PAS had been administrating the state for 21 years but had not been able to settle the issue despite a RM600 million assistance from the Federal Government.

Muhyiddin expressed confidence that the people would shift their support to BN as they wanted change.

On the flood in Kelantan, he said based on the information he received today, preparatory measures had been taken by the federal agencies and state government.

Meanwhile, he urged the media to provide updates on the flood situation.

“Not just once, but regularly whether on radio or television so the people are kept informed on the developments,” he added. — Bernama
