Ten charged with drug trafficking

ALOR SETAR: Ten men, including seven foreigners, were charged at the magistrates’ court here yesterday with trafficking 3.450kg of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) on Nov 11.

The accused were Jean Jupe, 43, from France, Robertus Cornelis Josephus, 50, and Anthony David Jeeves, 52, (Netherlands), Giam Cheng Hong, 60, and See Chee Kiong, 38, from Singapore, Jun Zhang, 37, (China), Robert William Blackwell, 46, (United Kingdom) and Lim Kiam Siong, 39, Ung Chii Ming, 29, and Lim Khai Sian, 24, from Alor Setar, Kedah.

They were charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

The group allegedly committed the offence about 5am at No. 55 Jalan Timur Dua, Off Jalan Kg Batin, Mergong Barrage Industrial Estate.

No plea was recorded and the accused merely nodded in understanding when the charge was read out to them in court.

Only Ung and Lim were represented by K Dev and Chong Seng Ming respectively, while the rest had yet to hire legal counsel.

Prosecution was led by DPP Suzanne Tiyon Bimen.

Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Ghani fixed Jan 19 for remention pending the chemist report. — Bernama
