PEKAN: Three flood mitigation projects in Pekan carried out at a cost of RM80 million are expected to be ready in June and September next year.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas said the three projects which are now 40 per cent completed was the first of four phases.

“The first project is the construction of bunds in the west and south, the main drain, Sungai Mat Dulang’s control structures while other associated works will be completed in September next year.

“The second project involving repairs of Sungai Parit’s channels, east drainage, Air Hitam’s connector and other related works will be completed in September while the third phase is Sungai Parit’s repairs that are expected to be completed in June next year,” he said..

Douglas Uggah said the implementation of these projects involved the use of polders to build a tire around the areas for flood eventuality in Pekan.

He said once the project was completed, it would avoid floods that hit a population of 24,173.

Floods in Pekan are mainly due to overflowing from Sungai Pahang which coincide with high tide that causes an increase in water level at surrounding swamps. — Bernama
