RTM given host broadcaster rights for 2012 London Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR: Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) is once again the host broadcaster for the 2012 London Olympics in England.

Datuk Seri Kamaruddin Siaraf, the Ministry of Information Communications and Culture Ministry’s Secretary-General said the broadcast of the world’s biggest sporting event would be done through the government’s television station for free viewing by the people of Malaysia.

“Broadcasting the Olympics through RTM will give all Malaysians an opportunity to watch all the action without having to subscribe to any pay-TV channels.

“By broadcasting the biggest sporting event to the entire nation, it can help inspire Malaysians to take up sports,” he told reporters when announcing RTM as the official Broadcaster of the 2012 London Olympics in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Director-General of Broadcasting in the Broadcasting Department of Malaysia, Datuk Norhyati Mohd Ismail said when broadcasting the Olympics, RTM would take the opportunity to promote its rebranding exercise.

“I am confident that being given the rights to broadcast the Olympics will help improve RTM’s rating and establish itself as a leading provider of various programmes to viewers in the country,” said Norhyati.

The 2012 London Olympics is scheduled from July 27 to Aug 12. — Bernama
