Woman with six children jailed and fined RM800 for theft

KUALA LUMPUR: A woman with six  children was sentenced to a day’s jail and fined  RM800, in default a month’s jail,  by the  magistrates’ court here yesterday after she pleaded guilty to  stealing several items, worth RM599.26, at the Carrefour hypermarket last Friday.

Magistrate Nur Azura Murah ordered Alinah Md Ithnain, a cashier at the hypermarket, to serve the sentence yesterday.

Alinah, 36, together with Mohd Shafiz Che Man, 20, were charged with committing the offence at counter 16, Carrefour, Section 5 Wangsa Maju here at 1.17pm last Dec 2.

They were charged under Section 381 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, which carried a jail term of up to
seven years and fine, if found guilty.

In mitigation, Alinah said she earned RM750 a month and had to help her husband to support the family.

Meanwhile, Mohd Shafiz, also pleaded guilty to the charge, but the court postponed to Jan 12 for sentencing pending his probation report as he was still below 21 years old.

Mohd Shafiz was allowed bail of RM1,500 in one surety.

Deputy public prosecutor Rebecca Mathan prosecuted. — Bernama
