Man from Selangor fined RM5,500 for selling pirated DVDs

KOTA KINABALU: A man from Selangor was fined RM5,500, in default 30 days’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for selling 183 pirated Digital Video Discs (DVDs) last month.

Anand R. Chandrasekaran, 31, pleaded guilty before magistrate Noor Hafizah Mohd Salim to selling the items without the ‘B’ certificate at a premises at Lorong Plaza Kingfisher, Kuala Inanam here on Nov 11.

She was charged under Section under Section 18 (4) (a) of the Film Censors Act 2002, punishable under Section 18 (5) of the same Act, that carries a fine of not less than RM5,000 or not more than RM30,000 or a maximum jail of three years, or with both, upon conviction.

In mitigation, Chandrasekaran pleaded for a lighter sentence and said this was his first offence.

The Home Ministry Department prosecuting officer Clarence D. Primus Tiandun pressed for a deterrent sentence taking into account public interest as this case was rampant in Sabah.
