Buyers urge action overstalled housing project

LAHAD DATU: Buyers of housing units in Bandar Sri Gemilang have urged the local authorities, including the elected representatives, to intervene in getting the developer to quickly revive the stalled Bandar Sri Gemilang housing project.

Idris Talzan, 46, one of the more than 1,000 buyers of housing units there, claimed that work on the troubled project had stopped for almost two years.

Idris said Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB), which was undertaking the project, was supposed to have completed the houses and handed over the keys by May 2009 but until today, there was no sign that work on the uncompleted project was going to resume any time soon.

“The bank has approved our loan applications and I have started to pay back the loan by monthly installments since 2009, but the house is still far for ready for occupation,” he said.

Another buyer, Jaafar Jinggal, 37, said he had to bear the burden of paying his housing loan and rent at the same time as he was staying in a rented home until the house he had bought in Bandar Sri Gemilang was ready for occupation.

“I have to pay RM670 per month for the loan and I also have to pay for the rent though my family should have been living in the house we have purchased instead of the rented home,” he said.

Jaafar said they have contacted the developer several times, but were merely told to be patient and to wait.

He said it was most regrettable that the developer had not cared enough to explain the matter or take positive action to resolve the problem speedily despite the hardship it was causing to the affected families which had bought the housing units.
