KUCHING: When 7-year-old Cedric Tan donned in his Hawaiian costume appeared on stage for a dance performance, the crowd immediately welcomed him with applause and cheers.

The crowd comprising his mates and teachers of the Intensive Tuition Centre (ITC) laughed and clapped throughout his 10-minute performance.

The boy who enjoyed singing and dancing later said it had taken him two days to practise the dance with the assistance of his sisters.

Tan was one of the students from the centre who participated in the talentine and fancy dress contest organised by the tuition centre as part of the special holiday course.

The centre’s assistant principal Goh Siang Yee yesterday said Tan who joined the tuition centre three years ago had showed tremendous improvement especially in his academic studies.

She explained that the activity was aimed to boost self-esteem of students who were known to be poor academically and who had not been recognised for their talents in other fields.

“Such students face problems in dealing with their own study and have no confidence to undertake tasks assigned as they are afraid of failures.

“We encourage them to strongly participate in the events as that will help them pick up confidence, face challenges or to shoulder any responsibility that may come their way”.

The special holiday course themed ‘Self-discovery and Self-recognition’ attracted about 150 students.

The centre is located at Tabuan Commercial Centre in Tabuan Jaya. For further information, contact the centre at 082-360790 or 361082.
