TANJUNG ARU: Three boys from SM La Salle who obtained all A’s in their Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR) examination yesterday attributed their success to their mothers’ love and dedication.

Ian Zhiyang Then, Guntam Neil Lingkapo and Mohd Zulaizat Awang Damit are among the school’s 13 best performers in the PMR examination this year.

“My mom was always there to send me for tuition, to bring me to the shop to buy my school and study books and is my constant source of encouragement,” Ian said after getting his examination result yesterday.

The lanky youth, who is described by one of the teachers as one of their best academic performers, said that he attended tuition four times a week and the tuition were for Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics, Science and English.

“My mom drove me to all these classes without fail,” he said.

He also attributed his success to paying attention in class, and having good teachers, both at school and tuitions.

Meanwhile, Guntam said his mother pushed him a lot to do well and helped him with his homework.

“My mom’s a housewife and is always around. She has helped me in a lot of things and is always there. She keeps pushing me to do better. I am grateful to my mom for always being there for me,” he said.

His strict study regime, of course, also played a crucial role in his success in obtaining 7A’s in the PMR examination.

“I started hitting the books between 8pm and 12 pm everyday. I usually focused on one subject for a whole week before moving to another. And if I felt I wa weak in a particular subject, I would concentrate on that,” he said.

And being studious and self-disciplined also helped, he said.

In addition to attending classes in school, and extra classes during tuition, Guntam also attended a study group formed among his classmates and they discussed about all topics including study methods, subjects, examinations and so on.

“It is fun to study in a group rather than alone,” he said.

He aspires to become a doctor and an entreprenuer one day.

Fellow classmate, Mohd Zulaizat, also thanked his mother for being around to encourage him.

“My mom is a teacher,” he explained.

On his study method, he said that he believes in learning from example and that he tagged along those who were studious.

“Ian is one of my peers and an example I follow. I do study constantly and I concentrate in school but it was only during the last month that I actually began working intensively to improve my comprehension and grasp of each subject,” he said.

SM La Salle produced 13 straight A’s students this year and 10 last year.

“Our pass rate has increased from 65.7 per cent in 2010 to 82.99 per cent this year,” said senior assistant, Ranah Fong.

Fong attributed the success to their students’ disciplined attitude as well as the teachers dedication in ensuring the school’s improved rating.
