JAKARTA: Several Indonesian provinces were flooded due to heavy rains over Christmas on Monday, causing evacuations and major roads to be closed.

Local media reports stated people had to be moved to relief centres or stayed with relatives living on higher grounds.

The north coastal Kraton road in Pasuruan, East Jawa was completely cut off from Sunday until early yesterday morning causing traffic to be diverted to the Pandaan-Purwosari-Pasuruan roads.

Bangil, Pohjentrek and Kraton in East Jawa were inundated by 0.75 metres of water affecting 2,515 homes.

Roads were closed and thousands of people were moved in Pontianak, Kalimantan Barat; Cirebon and Bandung in West Jawa; and Kampar, Riau in Sumatera when several rivers in these provinces overflowed causing flash
floods.

On Dec 24, Pekanbaru, Riau’s capital was immersed under more than 0.5 metres of flood waters. — Bernama
