LIMBANG: Saberkas Limbang managed to collect RM760.80 in four hours from its members and the public for fire victims from Rumah Bala Entakong in Mendalam, Limbang on New Year’s Eve.

Deputy chairman Sufian Mohat said the donation showed the caring spirit of those present at Golden Jubilee Square to usher in the New Year.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Bukit Kota and Batu Danau have also embarked on a charity drive to collect 80 boxes of used clothing for the victims, who lost everything during a fire last month.

“This is a result of the caring culture of Malaysians in reaching out to victims hit by disasters, irrespective of their background, and we are grateful to the associations, NGOs (non-governmental organisations) and private sector in complementing government efforts,” he said during a handing over ceremony at Rumah Bala Entakong on Monday.

Sufian, who is also Limbang District Council chairman, said the remote locality of the longhouse should be no barrier to helping the fire victims.

Rumah Bala Entakong is accessible only by river.

A team of 16 Saberkas members, as well as PBB Youth from Bukit Kota and Batu Danau were present.

“It was a memorable experience and an inspiration to continue fighting for more basic infrastructure to rural areas in line with the aspiration of the inclusive BN (Barisan Nasional) government,” added Sufian.

He also commended the spirit of the fire victims in overcoming adversity.
