PAINTING THE TOWN RED: With the approach of Chinese New Year, proprietors are displaying their lanterns and decorative items for sale.

SIBU: Chinese New Year is only two weeks away and traders have been busy decorating their shops and selling Chinese New Year decorative items.

A shop proprietor in Lembangan Road, who did not want to be named, said some of the lanterns and Chinese New Year decorative items she sold were her own designs.

She is no lantern maker but she knows what designs and decorations are in demand today.

TRADITIONAL: Bamboo lanterns displayed in the shop.

BEAUTIFUL: Some of the hanging lanterns.

“Basically, I would pick some lanterns and arrange them into decorative hanging lanterns.

“We do this every year and the reason is we want to give variety to our customers.”

Asked on the cost, she said it would depend on the types of lantern and the decorative materials used.

“Some of the decorations are based on customers’ demand,” she pointed out.

On other decorative items, she said the cute dragon stickers were in high demand right now.

She said most of the stocks were from Peninsular Malaysia and had arrived a few days ago.

Meanwhile, another proprietor told The Borneo Post that the demand for lanterns and Chinese New Year decorative items was almost the same every year.

“Sales this year has not differed much from that of previous years,” he said.
