KUALA LUMPUR: Umno information chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan described some of opposition’s ideas as ‘strange’ and stressed that these could be detrimental to the country and lead to social disintegration.
Ahmad, who is Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, was commenting on the recent statements made by opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and former Bar Council president Datuk S Ambiga.
In an interview with BBC on Thursday, Anwar spoke of the need to review Malaysia’s archaic law so as not to be seen as punitive and relevant.
“We Muslims and non-Muslims in Malaysia generally believe and committed to support the sanctity of marriage between men and women but we should not be seen to be punitive and consider the archaic law as relevant.”
Anwar was answering a question whether he was prepared to take “the idea of anti-discrimination as far as gay rights” were concerned.
Ahmad also said that the country would be destroyed if the call by Ambiga for Pakatan Rakyat to pardon those involved in minor corruption should it won Putrajaya, was implemented.
Ambiga reportedly made the call at the Pakatan Rakyat Convention in Alor Setar on Saturday.
“She should be aware that minor corruption could lead to major corruption. Corruption is like a cancer.
“We should weed it out irrespective of whether it is committed by ‘small fish’ or ‘big fish,’” he said. — Bernama
