KUCHING: Kuching police chief ACP Mun Kok Keong ended his two-year stint here yesterday, and is succeeded by ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad.

Mun is now the new police chief in Miri.

Met by reporters after the hand-over ceremony here yesterday, Mun commented that the safe-city programme had helped reduce crimes quite substantially.

“However, we need to continuously improve our strategy to curb crimes.”

On the erection of steel railings in several hot spots in the city, he said its implementation had seen a drop in the number of snatch theft cases, and advised members of the public not to make themselves vulnerable to crime.

“Beware of your surroundings at all times. Take your personal safety as number one, and not rely solely on the police.”

In advising the public to obey the law and respect policemen for upholding the law, he said summonses had to be issued from time to time to ensure the public respect the law.

“If you do not want to be inconvenienced, respect the law. Do not obstruct traffic by parking your car indiscriminately. Obeying the law will make Kuching a better place.”

On his role in Miri, Mun said he would need to reassess the city first before looking at areas to improve.

“Miri is also a tourist area, like Kuching. It is also a shopping heaven for neighbouring Brunei. I will see what I can do there.”

Also present at the simple ceremony yesterday was state police contingent management department head SAC Datuk Ahmad Sofian Md Yassin.
