“Two days after his tragic death, we felt a sudden emptiness and it was the darkest moment for the family especially his mother. Thanks to God, after endless prayers, his body was found on Jan 7,” said Sihas.

Herman was laid to rest in accordance to Islamic principles at Samariang Muslim cemetery.

“We are thankful for all the support, be it words of encouragement or gifts during this grieving period.”

Their gratitude also goes to Yusuf Awang Jaya, Billy Sujang, Mas Ammar Azhan Saie and Kampung Samariang Aman Neighbourhood Watch Committees for their support.

Sihas also thanked Welfare, Women and Family Development Minister Datuk Fatimah Abdullah, SUPP president Datuk Seri Peter Chin and Resource Planning Assistant Minister Datuk Naroden Majais.

He was proud of his son Herman heroic act even though Herman did not know how to swim.

“He sacrificed his life just to save the student (Kho Ying Qi) and this act eventually took him away forever from us.”

Herman was the third of five siblings and a bachelor.

Said to be a quiet and reserved person, the late Herman was better known for being kind-hearted and humble.

He converted to Islam in 2000 and the family accepted it with an open heart.

Meanwhile, Kho Ying Qi’s parents hoped that Herman’s family would remain calm and accept the fate of their late son.
