CNY rush sees several petrol stations running dry of RON95

SIBU: Several petrol stations here were drained dry of RON95 yesterday as festive celebrants rushed to fill up their vehicle gas tanks.

Long queues were seen at petrol stations as many cars were seen stopping to refill before moving on to their destinations for the Chinese New Year.

Some were seen leaving the station and going to refill their gas tank elsewhere.

When contacted yesterday, Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) Sibu branch deputy chief Geoffrey Gumalang believed this could be due to transportation problem as the supply came from Bintulu.

He, however, assured that there was no cause for alarm as petrol stations and depots had been told to keep sufficient stock to meet the increased demand of the Lunar New Year.

“Vehicle owners should not be rushing to fill up their tanks as new shipments are coming in.

“Rest assured that the glitch is temporary as stations are doing their level best to meet consumers’ demand,” Geoffrey said when asked to respond to the non circulation of the fuel in several stations here.

He suggested that vehicle owners should refill at other stations if the fuel was not available at the place they were refilling.

Geoffrey revealed that they had contacted the relevant stations to ensure there was no disruption of supply during the festive celebration.

“I was informed by a sales manager that fresh stock will arrive today (yesterday), and the situation will return to normal,” he said.
