MIRI: Sarawak is on the right track of producing the nation’s best golfers following the launch of its integrated junior development programme which is becoming very popular.

The Advisor of Miri Golf Club (KGM) Datuk Sebastian Ting said currently Sarawak has the most number of registered junior golfers, with KGM alone having 120 in their register.

“However, we currently do not have a golf academy yet. In term of registered junior golfers Sarawak has one of the largest numbers as we (KGM) alone have 120.

“It is a possibility that Miri has the largest junior golfers in Sarawak and even for the whole of Malaysia.

“I believe that Miri has the best golf competitions and junior programmes as KGM actively organises golf tournaments every month,” informed Ting.

Ting told The Borneo Post this yesterday after holding the Chinese New Year open house for the Acting Head of State Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar and wife Datin Amar Fatimah Mohd Iskandar and entourage.

Ting who is also the Political Secretary to the Minister for Energy, Green Technology and Water said this year’s 8th edition of the Junior Golf Tournament will be held in June.

He said although the tournament did not provide lucrative prizes to the winners, it however attracted many golfers from within and outside Malaysia, including Brunei.

“The competition has always been well received. For the participants, it is not only about the prizes but a platform to compete and to get to know each other very well. The tournament and junior golfers programme introduced in 1999 had also produced many competitive golf players for Malaysia,” Ting informed.

Among them were his daughter, Michelle who is currently studying in Australia, and fellow Mirian Dianne Luke and Joanne Lagan.
