Chaos at IRB office as BR1M deadline nears

RUSH IS ON: BR1M applicants rushing into the IRB office to get or submit their application forms, turning the place into a hive of human activity.

SIBU: It was a mad rush at the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) here yesterday as a mammoth crowd scrambled to apply for 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) as the Feb 10 deadline closes in.

Many were seen rushing to submit their application forms while others checked the status of their applications.

The IRB main entrance was seemingly not big enough to hold the massive crowd as many were seen standing by the roadside under the burning sun.

Over at the counters, tempers flared as some applicants were locked in a heated argument with the staff there.

It was believed that some misunderstanding about the application process had ignited the row.

Even so, the IRB staff should be given a pat on their back for their professionalism in calming the hard pressed applicants who had travelled from far-flung villages to benefit from the government’s handout.

Standing at the far end of the IRB counter, an applicant who wished only to be identified
as Linus moaned that it was difficult for him to get pass the crowd.

“There are just so many people at the main entrance, it is difficult to keep a queue. I think they to are trying to check the status of their applications,” he said.

The daily paid labourer said he was applying for the aid as he could not do so earlier due to work commitments.

“During the Chinese New Year celebration, I was busy helping with the loading and unloading of food items. I have several school-going children.”
