SINGAPORE: Singapore’s former deputy prime minister, the late Dr Toh Chin Chye, was cremated today at a private funeral at Mandai Crematorium.

Dr Toh, who was born in Perak, Malaysia in 1921, had been a key member of the republic’s first generation of leaders. He died on Friday at the age of 90.

The funeral was attended by family and friends, including Singapore President Tony Tan Keng Yam and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

In his eulogy, Lee described Dr Toh as a kind hearted person.

He said the demise of Dr Toh “reminds Singaporeans of how they got here, how much they owed to him and his generation as well as how heavy a responsibility they have to carry their vision forward.”

When the PAP was formed in November 1954, Dr Toh was its first chairman and had served as a cabinet minister until 1981. In 1988, at the age of 67, he retired as Member of Parliament for Rochore. – Bernama
