KUALA LUMPUR: Former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainuddin has advised members of Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties to be united and to work hard for the coalition’s victory in the next general election.

Daim, who was a long-time Umno treasurer, said the victory of opposition parties in the last general election, in 2008, was not due to their strength but owing to the BN’s weakness because the latter was not united.

With unity, there is no chance of the BN losing in the next general election, the 13th, he said.

“Indiscipline among party members can destroy the party. We lost many seats in the 2008 general election because of this. We lost because of our own weakness due to disunity and not because of the opposition’s strength,” he said at a gathering dubbed “Tun Daim with the Lembah Pantai BN”, here last night.

Also present was Lembah Pantai Umno chief and Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.

Daim said the BN can recapture the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat if party members are united and give their undivided support to the BN candidate.

The Lembah Pantai seat is now held by Nurul Izzah, vice-president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and a daughter of PKR advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Daim said he foresaw corruption, the economy, inflation and leadership as the issues to crop up during the campaign in the next general election. –Bernama
