DOUBLE CELEBRATIONS: The guests, past and present chiefs of the Youth and Women sections of UCA Division jointly cut the anniversary cakes to mark the occasion.

SIBU: The Youth section of the United Chinese Associations (UCA) Sibu Division has been urged to transform ‘Chuan Corridor’ (Creative Corridor), which is located at the Sibu Town Square Phase 1, into a market for youths.

In making the call, Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said through such an effort the corridor would not merely be a place of recreation but also an avenue for youths to start a career in business.

“This can become another fascinating landmark in Sibu,” he said at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Youth Section and 23rd anniversary celebration of the Women’s Section of UCA Sibu Division.

Wong, who is also Minister of Local government and Community development, said the Youth section could submit its proposal to the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) for consideration.

“The proposed market could let Sibu youths unleash their creativities and innovativeness in conducting their businesses.”

He recalled that such a project was also mapped out by UCA Sibu Division and SMC during the 30th anniversary celebration of the former five years ago.

Touching on the role of women, Wong lamented the fact that only 40 per cent of women with productivity levels had joined the job market.

However, with the mushrooming of childcare centres throughout the country, women could now come out to work without worrying about their children, he said.

“Youths and women are both important human resources in helping to materialise the development of our state, especially during the implementation stage of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).”

President of The Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia Tan Sri Dato Sri Pheng Yin Huah, President of The Confederation of Chinese Associations of Sarawak Wong Aik Loung, the women’s section chief of The Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia Datuk Agnes Shim Tshin Nyuk, and President of UCA Sibu Division Datuk Lau Nai Hoh were among those present.
